Dr. Anthony Fauci is again in Sen. Rand Paul’s crosshairs.

The Kentucky senator has filed a criminal referral to the Department of Justice, alleging Fauci lied to Congress. In July 2021, Fauci denied in a hearing that the National Institutes of Health funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan.

But documents shared by Senator Paul seem to contradict that claim.

In February 2020, Fauci wrote to then-HHS Inspector General Garrett Grisby. In the email Fauci notes that “highly credible scientists” believe COVID-19 might have been artificially mutated. He said their suspicion was heightened because the scientists in Wuhan “are known to have been working on gain-of-function experiments to determine the molecular mechanism associated with bat viruses adapting to human infection.”

Paul wrote on X (the new name for Twitter), “This directly contradicts everything he said in committee hearing to me.”
