You might want to skip the stevia for tomorrow morning’s coffee.
A new report from the World Health Organization shows that long-term usage of non-sugar sweeteners may increase risk for type two diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even mortality.
The report says non-sugar sweeteners are “not essential dietary factors and have no nutritional value.”
The organization recommended lowering dietary sweetness overall rather than turning to artificial sweeteners. They also warned that people without diabetes should not use these sweeteners such as aspartame, and stevia.
Meanwhile Coca-Cola criticized the report, citing a different study calling non-sugar sweeteners “a critical tool that can help manage body weight.”
