On Wednesday, an artifact of religious history sold at a New York auction for roughly $38 million.
The Codex Sassoon, a near complete Hebrew Bible, has been dated at over one thousand years old. It was purchased by lawyer and former ambassador Alfred Moses on behalf of the ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Moses said of the purchase in a written statement “I rejoice in knowing that it belongs to the Jewish people. It was my mission, realizing the historic significance of Codex Sassoon, to see it resides in a place with global access to all people.”
The codex is made up of seven hundred and ninety two pages of parchment. According to experts, it is one of the most complete copies of the Hebrew Bible for its age, with only twelve pages missing from the entire manuscript.
With the sale, the codex is now the second most expensive historical document ever sold at an auction.
