One in six Americans is now retirement age, according to government data.

The most recent census data shows a boom in the population who is 65 years or older. In 2010, there were 40.3 million people in this age bracket. That number grew to 55.8 million in 2020. That’s the largest gain recorded over a decade.

And when you look at census data over the past century, this demographic has seen five times more growth than the total U.S. population.

Those gains are largely driven by Baby Boomers, who began to turn 65 in 2011. The last Boomer won’t be retirement age until 2029, meaning this will be a continuing trend.

There is now growing concern over the United States’ ability to meet future health needs.

The CDC warns that by 2030, cancer may kill 640,000 people annually. This would make it the number one cause of death. Meanwhile, Alzheimer’s might kill an additional 150,000.
