Senate Democrats with the help of some Republicans thwarted efforts to bring back a long-standing abortion rule.
The Senate yesterday blocked Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville’s resolution. The resolution prevents the Department of Veterans Affairs from funding abortions for retired service members. Since 1992 the Veterans Health Care Act has banned abortions and abortion counseling. But President Biden disregarded that back in September, while also covering travel costs and paid time off for service members to end their pregnancies.
The move was part of the Biden administration’s pushback against the overturning of Roe v Wade. But Tuberville says Biden doesn’t get to change the law like that.
49 Democrats and 2 Republicans voted to back Biden’s move in a 51-48 vote. Those Republicans were Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia was the only Democrat to side with Republicans.
