A North Carolina lawmaker ditched the Democratic party yesterday in a move that could dramatically change state policies. State Representative Tricia Cotham said party policies and their bullying tactics were key factors in her decision.

The lawmaker said that the final straw came when Democrats blasted her for using the American flag and praying hands emoji on social media.

Democrats claim she’s betraying her deep blue Charlotte district and have demanded her resignation. But Republicans see new hope for previously dead bills.

In recent years, Democratic governor Roy Cooper frequently vetoed bills from the conservative majority. Now, Cotham gives the party a veto-proof majority in the state.

This political earthquake means bills on election security, pro-life policies, and other right-wing policies have new life.

While Cotham remains a wildcard vote on most issues, Republican lawmakers are sure to revive some previously vetoed bills in the coming months.
