Two British parents recently celebrated their baby’s first birthday. While that may not sound out of the ordinary, it was a miraculous milestone for Lauren Ormston and Oliver Dewey.
Back in 2022, a healthy pregnancy was derailed when Ormston went into labor over four months early. Doctors gave their baby Isla a 10% survival chance. She weighed only 1.17 pounds at birth, which is less than a loaf of bread.
Isla could not breathe without a ventilator. She also had a brain bleed and a hole in her heart. But after six weeks of uncertainty, Isla moved from a ventilator to an oxygen mask.
Then after 130 days in the hospital, the proud parents finally took her home. The now one-year-old weighs 15.4 pounds and is learning to crawl and stand up.
