Good news for all you dad joke enthusiasts – it appears that the often maligned-style of humor can be good for raising your kid.

According to an article in the British Psychological Society’s journal, the types of puns and jokes that embarrass kids is actually good exposure.

It says: “By continually telling children jokes that are so bad that they’re embarrassing, fathers may push their children’s limits for how much embarrassment they can handle.” Just as a dad’s roughhousing play helps in physical and cognitive development.

In a similar way, dad jokes are presented as a spoken form of roughhousing – teaching mental fortitude by withstanding short amounts of embarrassment.

So the next time you’re telling your child a joke that makes them squirm, you may want to let them know that you’re only doing your God-given duty as a parent!
