New polling data shows that President Joe Biden’s approval among independent voters is miles deep underwater, with a net approval of -50%, as of July 6, 2022. 

According to recent CIVIQS data, a minuscule 18% of independent voters say that Biden is doing a good job as Commander in Chief, while 68% of independents disapprove.

The polling marks a major decline from Biden’s initial approval ratings, whereupon at his inauguration he enjoyed 41% approval and 44% disapproval among independent voters.

While his approval was on a slight decline throughout the first few months of his presidency, Biden’s polling dramatically dropped off following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and subsequent takeover by the Taliban. 

On August 15, 2022 – the day the Taliban captured Kabul – Biden was sitting at 32% approval and 57% disapproval with independents. Three months later those numbers had dropped down to 24% approval and 64% disapproval.

By way of comparison, President Donald Trump retained a fairly stable approval rating among independent voters throughout his presidency, although his polling took a hit during the pandemic.

At the start of his presidency, Trump saw a 41% approval to 47% disapproval among independents. Immediately before the pandemic that number was 43% approval and 52% disapproval, dropping off to 39% approval and 56% disapproval by the time he left office. 

At his lowest, Trump saw -20% net approval among the independents.
