Kim Pegula, co-owner of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres, remains in a Florida hospital recovering from a health issue she suffered in June.
“Kim is progressing well and is resting and rehabilitating,” the family said in a statement released on Tuesday. “We are grateful for the medical professionals providing her care and to everyone for their prayers and well wishes.”
It was the first update regarding Pegula’s heath in two weeks. The family previously revealed that Pegula was hospitalized for “some unexpected health issues’ shortly after her 53rd birthday.
Kim and her husband, Terry Pegula, purchased the Sabres for $189 million in February 2011. They bought the Bills for $1.4 billion in 2014. Kim Pegula is considered the public face of both franchises and she is the only female owner of color in the National Football League and National Hockey League. She serves on various committees, including the NFL’s workplace diversity committee and the NHL’s executive inclusion council.
Kim spent her early childhood years in an orphanage in Seoul, Korea, before she was adopted by a family in Fairport, outside of Rochester, New York.
Faith was an important part of her life growing up. She and her two older brothers attended Houghton, a Christian college, where her father later worked. Terry was raised Catholic and religion has been a foundation for their marriage.
“I grew up in a very faith-based household,” Kim told The Buffalo News in 2015. “I think a lot of the fundamentals of your faith can be seen at work and at home — it doesn’t necessarily have to be how many times you go to church. The same values that I grew up with at home, that I learned at church, that I learned at college — they’ve been a very important part of everything we do, from business to family life.”
