Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Americans believe transgenderism – the belief that one can choose his or her own gender regardless of biology – is “not a healthy condition,” and 72% say transgender ideology should not be taught in schools, according to a new nationwide poll

The study, conducted by Summit.org and polling survey firm McLaughlin and Associates, also found that an overwhelming majority of respondents (90%) oppose gender alteration procedures for minors.

“Everywhere Americans look, the media and education culture is bombarding us with relentless, daily messages in support of transgenderism without limits,” Dr. Jeff Myers, President of Summit.org, said in a press release about the results. “Despite this intensity, these stunning numbers show plainly that the vast majority of Americans aren’t buying what they’re being sold.”

While the plurality of Americans see transgenderism as an unhealthy condition, a third of them said they keep their opinions on the subject of transgender ideology to themselves, likely fearing they will face unpleasant repercussions in an increasingly hostile sociopolitical environment. Still, 30% said they are willing to speak up about the issue.

Interestingly, when broken down by political affiliation only 51% of Democrats and 31% of independents said they believed transgenderism was healthy. 13% of those who identified as Republican held the same viewpoint.

Myers also said the results show that the vast majority of Americans “don’t think this issue belongs anywhere near our kids.”

Amongst the 72% who said that teaching of transgenderism in school is inappropriate, 30% said that the teaching “is dangerous because it could lead to children being groomed for sexual encounters at a young age.”

Broken down by political affiliation, 89% of Republicans, 66% of independents, and 43% of Democrats called the teaching of the agenda in schools either inappropriate or dangerous.

Myers pointed to the “powerful chilling effect that [transgender] propaganda is having on society, as this research shows that tens and tens of millions disagree with what they see, but are afraid to say anything about their views,” adding, “We trust this poll will spark all-important conversations so we can properly address these issues as a nation.”

Results were from a survey of 1,000 likely general election voters nationwide with an accuracy of +/- 3.1% at a 95% confidence interval. Polling was conducted April 22nd through April 26th.
