Reports surfaced Wednesday of an alleged racially-motivated crime against American Olympic gymnast Suni Lee.
Lee said that while she was with friends in Los Angeles last month, a group of people drove by shouting racial slurs at Lee and her friends, all of whom are of East Asian descent. The 18-year-old Lee further reported that one of the passengers in the car sprayed her in the arm with pepper spray and the drove by.
Lee said in an interview with PopSugar,
I was so mad, but there was nothing I could do or control because they skirted off. I didn’t do anything to them, and having the reputation, it’s so hard because I didn’t want to do anything that could get me into trouble. I just let it happen.
In her first Olympic Games in Tokyo this past summer, Lee won a gold medal in the individual all around event. Lee will likely remain in the spotlight in the coming months, even if Tokyo was her only Olympic Games, as the gymnast is appearing on this current season of the reality television show “Dancing with the Stars.”
