Two people have died and 17 remain missing in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Fred that brought flooding to western North Carolina on Tuesday. The storm also took out at least 10 bridges and damaged thousands of homes and businesses. Search and rescue efforts continue as the east coast braces for another storm brewing in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Henri is strengthening off the coast of North Carolina and it is believed that it will turn into a hurricane in the coming days.

Richard Sackler testified in a hearing for his family’s bankruptcy court case on Wednesday that he and the rest of his family were not responsible for the national opioid epidemic. The Sacklers had previously run Purdue Pharma which was responsible for the massive dispersal and irresponsible prescription of opioids to thousands of, especially low income, Americans. The Sacklers are now facing thousands of damages claims which are currently being resolved in bankruptcy court.

Democrat lawmakers came back to Texas on Thursday ending the months long stalemate over the new voting reform legislation that was initially put forward by Texas Republicans. With the Texas Democrats return, a quorum will not be reached meaning that the Texas voting reform law will move forward and should pass very easily. This voting bill joins a number of others across a number of historically Republican states.
