The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are about to commence, but setbacks to the Games continue to come crashing down.  As all Americans now know, the Games were postponed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but even now, many thousands are outraged that the Games are happening at all due to reports of rising Covid-19 cases in Tokyo.  The reports have forced the Olympic organizers to hold the entire event without fans and only allow necessary personell to attend the events.  In addition to this, rumors have spread for the last several years that certain members of the International Olympic Committe were bribed to elect for the 2020 Olympics to be held in Tokyo.

To add more fuel to the fire, the organizing committe fired the director of the opening ceremonies, Kentaro Kobayashi, early Thursday morning, one day before the ceremonies.  Kobayashi was fired due to an alleged comedy routine from 1998 where he made joking remarks about the Holocaust.  Another opening ceremony participant was also fired early this week, composer Keigo Oyamada.  Oyamada’s musical compositions were supposed to be played during the opening ceremonies, but that will no longer happen after allegations broke that he had bullied several classmates as a child.

Despite all of these setbacks, the opening ceremonies for the Tokyo Olympics will begin Friday, July 23, at roughly 7:00 am E.S.T.  The ceremonies will re-air in primetime on NBC on Friday night.  The games will run until Sunday, August 8.
