Michael Avenatti has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison following a conviction of extortion of sports apparel giant, Nike, Inc. Avenatti was a momentary flashy and bombastic foe of former president Trump when he represented pornographic actress Stormy Daniels in her law suits against Trump while he was president. During that time, Avenatti became a cable news personality overnight sharply criticizing Trump and even considering a presidential run in 2020.

However, Avenatti’s career took a quick nose dive shortly after gaining his fame as he was charged with multiple instances of fraud. Avenatti had a laundry list of crimes on his resume including swindling various clients of approximately $10 million, defrauding Ms. Daniels, and committing fraud with respect to his taxes and investments. Due to these misdeeds, Avenatti quickly lost his license to practice law and became a public pariah and disgrace. He will serve two and a half years for his extortion of Nike and is awaiting at least two more trials for his fraud against past clients and personal tax fraud.

Avenatti’s sentencing in the Nike case was substantially less than the federal minimum sentencing guidelines of nine years. The Judge in the Nike case indicated that the primary reason for his leniency had to do with the sincere remorse Avenatti displayed for his actions. That said, Avenatti will have an additional three years of supervised release after his two and a half year stint in prison is served. In addition, it is highly likely that Avenatti will face additional time in prison at the conclusion of the two additional fraud trials that will take place later this month.
